You just finished a tough workout and you feel unstoppable.  As you are walking out of the gym you start to think about that never ending to-do list running through your head and suddenly you feel stressed.

There is a tasty coffee shop around the corner with fresh doughnuts.

You stop to think, nope, you react.  Before you know it you are in the coffee shop demolishing doughnuts and coffee.

All of a sudden, you feel relief. But, that feeling of ‘oh-so-good’ relief doesn’t last forever. Reality hits and sinks right back in (just like the doughnuts you were consuming)

Then you start to feel guilty, anxious, and remorse. Asking yourself questions like ‘Why did I just do that to myself?’ and ‘Now I have to go work twice as hard in the gym tomorrow’ these feelings are then usually accompanied by more stress and guess what, more unwanted calories.

Now, the question is, how do overcome this habit? How do I not stress eat? The solution, have a specific plan when you become stressed. There are many way to alleviate stress that doesn’t harm your calories. For example ‘If I feel overwhelmed I will stop and take 5 deep breaths’ or listen to your new favorite song or call a friend.

Here is a list of a few more strategies to implement instead of stress-eating:

  1. Journal
  2. Go for a walk
  3. Stretch
  4. Practice deep breathing
  5. Turn on a meditation app for 5 minutes
  6. Sip on hot tea
  7. Count your wins

These are a few of many.  You can even come up with some calorie-free strategies on your own to help you alleviate your stere-eating habit!
